福尔摩斯是大家都非常喜欢的大侦探。其实在现实生活中并没有这样一个人，他只是由苏格兰的一位作家创作的一个角色。
Sherlock Holmes is a character(角色) created by the Scottish writer Sir Conan Doyle(柯南道尔).
Holmes was the world’s first “consulting detective(咨询侦探)”, that is to say, people went to him for help when they wanted to solve a case(案件); he would often solve a problem without leaving home.
Sherlock Holmes was born on January 6, 1854. He spent 2 years at university and then he lived near the British Museum.
Sometime during 1882 Holmes met Dr. John H. Watson and they became close friends. The two then shared rooms at 221B, Baker Street, London. There they spent many years together before Watson got married.
Holmes had investigated(调查) about 1,000 cases by 1891. In 1891, Professor Moriarty, the most dangerous criminal(罪犯), “killed” him. People thought he died, but he didn’t. He traveled to many parts of the world, such as Asia.
He appeared in London in 1894 and again lived in Baker Street.
He again solved many hundreds of cases until he retired(退休) sometime during 1903-04.
His retirement is people’s great loss(损失). We all hope he is doing well as he raises bees along the coast.
Sherlock Holmes is not only the most famous detective in literary(文学的) history, but perhaps the most famous fictitious(虚构的) character in all of the literature. For over one hundred years, Conan Doyle’s 56 short stories and 4 novels about this great detective have become known to many, many, many people around the world. |
