Teaching Plan for Unit 9 SEFC Book A Designed by Chen Dongjie Contents: Unit 9 Part4 Reading Life on the Go SEFC Book A Teaching Aims: 1. Train the Ss’ reading ability to skim and scan. 2. Learn and master the following words: teenager, add, calendar, reminder, appointment, behaviour, emergency 3. Encourage the Ss to take a critical view of mobile phones and use them correctly. Teaching Difficulties: 1. How to make the Ss understand the text better. 2. How to guess the meaning of new words based on the context. Teaching Method: Top-and-down model Teaching Activities: 1. Questioning-and-answering activity to get the details of each paragraphs. 2. Meaningful practice: making sentences to have the Ss master some new words. ( 造句接龙 ) Teaching Aids: 1. A mobile phone 2. A picture of a mobile phone Procedure Step 1 Warming-up ( 2 mins ) 1. ( Show the Ss a mobile phone ) T: We all know that this is a mobile phone. Many people are using it. Have you ever used a mobile phone? Ss: Yes. 2. Show the Ss a picture of mobile phone, and get them to tell the construction of a mobile phone, such as: screen, number key, direction key, talk key, selection key, OK key, back key Step 2 Presentation ( 2 mins ) 1. Ask the Ss to open their books on Page 59 and guess the meaning of the title: Life on the Go. 2. Get three or four Ss to answer it and then the teacher explain the meaning of the title both in English and in Chinese. Step 3 Drill ( 11 mins ) 1. Give the Ss three minutes to go through the text and then answer a question: Are cellphones popular in Middle School? T: Mobile phones are popular among many people. However, are they popular in Middle School? OK, read the text as quickly as you can to get the answer. Three minutes is given to you. Let’s begin. ( After three minutes, get one student to answer it.) S1: Yes, they’re popular in Middle School. 2. Questioning-and-Answering activity to let the Ss get the details from Par. 2 to Par. 4. Before they read each paragraph, the question is given beforehand. The questions are asked like this: (1) Besides talking to people, mobile phones can be used for many things, what are they? (2) Mobile phones can also cause problems, what are they? (3) Why are mobile phones so popular? The teacher gives Ss limit time to find the answers and get the Ss to answer it. Meanwhile, the teacher writes some words on the Bb. Step 4 Presentation ( 18 mins ) 1. Give the Ss three minutes to read the text again and find out the difficult words. 2. Show the Ss some important words on the Bb and guess the meaning based on the context with the Ss. The words are: teenager, add, remind, appointment, behaviour, emergency. The teacher explain the new words like this: teenager: We know teen from the words thirteen, fourteen, fifteen, etc. and we know what age means. We also know the suffix-er is often used to refer to a person, e.g. driver, reader, etc. So we can guess that a teenager is a person who is between thirteen and nineteen years old. add: The text tells us that new features are added and then lists new features that are the latest cellphone have. I can guess that new features are added means to put new features with the old ones … 3. Let the Ss put forward other difficult words and deal with them together. Step 5 Practice ( 11 mins ) T: Now let’s play a game. You’re divided into 6 groups. Use the seven new words we just learnt to make a passage. Each student , one sentence. The group whose member hands up his/her hand the most quickly and speak out a sentence will be given a big smile face. You can come up with sentences like: A teenager is looking at a calendar. Then she adds a triangle on the calendar to remind her of the important appointment with her boy friend. She knows she must pay attention to her behaviour that day. At that time, a bell of emergency is ringing. Her kitchen is on fire. Step 6 Summary and homework ( 1 mins ) T: today we’ve read a passage and learnt mobile phones have many uses. They are also popular with teenagers. But they also cause problems to school students. I suggest you not to bring your mobile phones to our school. Besides we’ve learnt some important words. You must remember them and use them correctly. Today you will have an interesting homework: Design your own mobile phone. This information on Page 60 can help you. In the next period, the best one will be chosen. Besides, do the exercise on Page 60. Layout of the Bb (板书设计)
